Nathan's Team at Leeds Carnegie

Below is an announcement that will be in the program at Leeds Carnegie's game on Sunday.

We are going to the play off match at Leeds this Sunday. The U17's and the U12's are carrying out a bucket collection in Keighley kit. A lot of the senior players/members are going as well to lend support.

The Nathan Cubitt Trust Fund
Everyone connected with Leeds Carnegie were saddened by the tragic news that young rugby player, Nathan Cubitt, had suffered a serious injury whilst playing for his local club, Keighley RUFC, last year. At today’s game we welcome Keighley Under 17s, who will be present around the stadium to collect funds for the Nathan Cubitt Trust, please do give generously. Below is a statement from Keighley’s Chairman, Sam Griffin.
On Sunday 6th November 2011 one of our boys, 16-year-old Nathan Cubitt, broke his neck whilst playing for Keighley Under 17s against a combined Bradford & Bingley/Baildon team.
He became the youngest client on the Rugby Football Union’s Injured Players Foundation (IPF) immediate care programme. Now he faces a long and difficult journey to achieve the best that his spinal injuries will allow. At the moment he has some use of both arms, but not of both hands – he has no feeling below his armpits and doctors have warned him that he may never walk again.
Despite the prognosis, Nathan’s attitude to his condition has amazed everyone and his mother, Sue, describes his reaction to his circumstances as ‘inspirational’. She said: “He is working really hard with the physiotherapist to get back what he can, but I think everything he does get back now will be a bonus. He is mad about his sport and would love to play a game of rugby again, but I don’t think that will ever happen. His whole attitude is fantastic. He has a wicked sense of humour and he’s a cracking lad. He is such a remarkable young man and the way he is coping is keeping us all strong”.
Thanks to the impact of Twitter, Nathan’s tragic story was quickly conveyed to the global rugby family with startling results. Messages of support and encouragement came in an avalanche of goodwill from all parts of the world, with grass roots players and well-known senior international players combining to produce a flood of heart-warming messages.
While Nathan continues his treatment at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, we are in the early stages of generating financial backing for his trust fund. I would like on behalf the Keighley club and the Cubitt family to thank this afternoon’s spectators for their great kindness and support.

Waxing event update

Pictures of wax night.  We would like to say a massive thank you to Jackie Naylor, landlady of the Prince of Wales Pub at Allerton, for hosting the event.

The event has raised £510, so a massive thank you to all who lost hair and donated money at the event. We did challenge Nathan to join you, to which he laughed and said go for it, I can't feel anything so I'll just laugh at them.

Jackie has said today that Si, the drag dj from the event, has just taken over Candy in Bradford.  He would be willing to host a similar event in order to raise money for Nathan. So watch this space for further updates, and event details.

Please also don't forget to register your interest in Nathan's Tag Rugby event, by emailing nathantagrugby@gmail.com and Mark will send you the information.

Rugby Family

The piece below is a press statement from Tony Simpson on behalf of Keighley Rugby Club

What a night! What a game! What a triumph for Nathan! The Over 35 game at Bradford Salem, which doubled as the official opening of their excellent floodlights, was a truly memorable occasion in every respect and one which deservedly earned our hosts a huge round of applause.
This was Bradford Salem at their social best – the club has long had a handsome reputation for their mastery of the social occasion – and thanks to their efforts and those of the celebrities who supported them, the event has raised a magnificent £3,400 towards the Nathan Cubitt Trust Fund.
With a terrific crowd supporting the event – the biggest for many a long year according to someone who knows about these things – and rugby personalities like Robbie Paul, John Bentley, Colin Stephens and Scott Benton adding the glitz which helped to pull in a bumper audience, this was a memorable occasion.
More than that, the rugby was competitive from first to last, with plenty of ingrained skills on show to ensure that the match offered genuine quality for both sets of supporters to savour.
The whole package proved to be a touching experience for Nathan, who watched the game and later shared in the post-match festivities with the players.
“Can I say how grateful I am to all the people who have been so generous with their support,” he said: “I’m hugely indebted to everyone at Bradford Salem for such a special night and I’d also like to thank all the other clubs from all parts of the country for their kindness and generosity.
“You hear so much about rugby union being one big family and the way people have responded to my accident proves that. The atmosphere at Salem was very moving and while I was struggling to say anything on the night, I want everyone to know how grateful I am for all the support which has been shown to me from near and far. Thank you all.”
